Friends of Morgan Freeman’s granddaughter and of the boyfriend accused of killing her said Monday that they were blindsided by her grisly sidewalk slaying.
“There were no red flags,” said a longtime pal of E’Dena Hines’ boyfriend, Lavar Davenport, who was charged with second-degree murder Monday as he remained in a psych ward at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
“He had something in his system that made him snap.”
Davenport, 30 — who once checked himself into a mental hospital — allegedly plunged a hunting knife into Hines 16 times in Washington Heights early Sunday.
He was screaming, “Get out, devils,” and “Jesus Christ is born,” according to witnesses.
But there was little hint of the impending attack, with photos showing the couple happily running errands in Memphis, Tenn.
In them, Hines, 33, can be seen clutching Davenport’s arm as they go grocery shopping and stopping at a post office. The couple, both NYU grads, returned to New York from Memphis in April after Hines scored a lead role in indie film “Landing Up.”
Freeman’s ex-wife, Myrna Colley Lee, helped them get an apartment on West 162 Street through her friendship with the home’s owner. As they started a life together, Davenport was weighed down by the stress of supporting his mom and sister in Pennsylvania as well as three children from two other women.
His friend, who lives in The Bronx, saw Davenport Friday.
“He was a little bit stressed trying to figure things out. He had a lot of stuff going on,” the pal recalled.
"I was always surprised at how he was able to keep grinding and bringing money in for everyone. He was always working.”
Most recently, he was working as an extra on the Jennifer Lopez TV drama, “Shades of Blue.”
The day he cracked appeared to have begun like any other day.
Friends told cops he spent Saturday with one of his baby mamas.
“They went out to the movies, a few barbecues and dinner with friends. Nobody noticed anything strange,” a police source said.
At around 2 a.m., he called a friend to come hang out. But when the pal arrived, Davenport looked “totally despondent,” the source said.
Moments later, Davenport was on top of Hines, hacking away at her, the source said.
