A little birdie may have helped El Chapo fly the coop.
Government officials searching the cell of escaped drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman discovered a dead sparrow in his trash can, according to Mexican newspaper Reforma.
They believe the bird, which officials reportedly nicknamed “Chapito,” was used by Guzman’s associates to test the safety of the air in the mile-long tunnel that connected his shower to a nearby construction site.
The Sinaloa cartel boss also left a small LCD television turned on inside his cell with the volume raised to throw off guards.
Compounding the racket was noise from waterproofing work that coincided with the final stages of construction on the high-tech tunnel that led Guzman to freedom, sources said.
The billionaire drug lord then had plenty of time to travel through the sophisticated escape route on a red motorbike.
