An Ohio mom who smothered her 1-year-old daughter to death with a pillow because she wouldn't stop crying has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Janishcia Cottingham pleaded guilty to carrying out the horrific killing of little girl Robin at her Millvale, Cincinnati, home on Aug. 15, 2013.
The 25-year-old single mom — who in court claimed she loved her child and had her name inked onto her jail slippers — has never fully explained her motivation, reports the Cincinnati Enquirer.
But Hamilton County Common Pleas Court heard that, on the day of the attack, the infant was sick and repeatedly crying.
Cottingham, who had previously suffered from depression and anxiety, "got overwhelmed," said her attorney Will Welsh.
"Records show she was asking for help. She needed help," he added.
She held the child in her arms as she smothered her with a pillow, reports Toledo News Now.
The tot's lifeless body was then placed inside a travel crib and Cottingham walked four miles to her grandmother's Avondale home.
From there she called her mom in Atlanta. Her grandmother overheard her saying that "the baby was in heaven" and called cops.
Cottingham was arrested, and initially found incompetent to stand trial on a charge of aggravated murder.
That verdict later changed, however, and she was due to plead her case from Wednesday.
She then altered her mind at the last minute and confessed to manslaughter, felonious assault and child endangering.
