An inmate serving time for murder at East Jersey State Prison was found dead Sunday night, according to the state Department of Corrections.
Nicholas W. Tejeda, 57, was found unresponsive in his cell at 11:05 p.m., according to Minhaj Hassan, spokesman for the DOC.
Tejeda had been a prisoner at East Jersey State since Oct. 2007, after pleading guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting his ex-wife and her lover.
Tejeda was officially pronounced dead 30 minutes later by a facility doctor. The DOC declined to provide more details, saying an autopsy will be conducted by the county medical examiner's office.
The DOC will conduct its own investigation into Tejeda's death, Hassan said.
