Canadian Man in Joker Mask Who Threatened to Kill One Arab Person a Week is Arrested
MONTREAL — A man in Quebec has been arrested in connection with a video posted on YouTube showing someone threatening to kill an Arab person every week, police said Wednesday.
Police spokesman Andre Leclerc said the man was arrested early Tuesday morning.
The person in the video was wearing a mask of the Batman character “The Joker” and brandished what looks like a pistol as he made the threats and spoke about last week’s terrorist attacks in Paris that left at least 129 people dead.
Leclerc said a toy weapon with compressed air was confiscated when they arrested the 24-year-old man.
Quebec City’s acting public security minister denounced the video.
“Really, this is a totally ridiculous attitude that must be condemned,” Pierre Moreau said. “People who try this kind of thing at home to make themselves interesting leave themselves open to very serious sentences.”
The suspect is scheduled to appear at a Montreal courthouse Wednesday afternoon to face various charges, including uttering threats. Leclerc said there could also be charges related to inciting hatred.
The video surfaced on Tuesday and followed an attack on a Muslim woman in Toronto that police said appeared to be “motivated by hate.” Over the weekend, a mosque in Ontario was set ablaze in an act police are treating as a hate crime.
