Mark Chapman #81A3860
Wende Correctional Facility
3052 Wende Road
Alden, NY 14004
Every two years since 2000 Mark David Chapman has sat down with members of the New York State Division of Parole and rehashed details of his Dec. 8, 1980, killing of John Lennon outside the Dakota apartment building on Central Park West. His sixth and latest hearing, on Sept. 7, 2010, was no exception, going step by step through his muddled planning as if being interrogated for the first time.
''I made a horrible decision to end another human being's life, for reasons of selfishness,'' Chapman, now 55, told two parole commissioners in Rochester in his video interview from the Attica Correctional Facility. ''I felt that by killing John Lennon I would become somebody, and instead of that I became a murderer, and murderers are not somebodies.''
Chapman shot Lennon outside The Dakota apartment building in New York City. Chapman fired at Lennon five times, hitting him four times in his back. Chapman remained at the scene reading J. D. Salinger's novel The Catcher in the Rye until the police arrived and arrested him. Chapman repeatedly said that the novel was his statement.
